Abstract
(fl 1635; d c. 1656). Spanish sculptor. His fame rests on his statue of the Victorious Christ (1635; Cáceres, Santuario de Serradilla) commissioned by the lay sister Francisca de Oviedo for her foundation of a hospital in Serradilla. The theme specified was a monk’s vision of Christ with his hand gesturing his willing renouncement of life. He embraces the Cross standing on a serpent and a skull, a composition symbolizing victory over sin and death. The work was greatly admired by Philip IV and was displayed at the royal palace between 1635 and 1637. After the statue was transferred to the Santuario, it became the object of a devotional cult, particularly through its numerous copies. One of these is in the Augustinian convent of Tacoronte (Canary Isles). Rioja was also involved in founding bronze sculptures for the Court. Manuel de Contreras was among his followers. J.
