Abstract
German, 18th century, male. Active in Augsburg. Born 1732; died 1801. Engraver. Portraits, architectural views. Georg Probst produced urban views of different towns in Europe as far afield as Russia. He also did views, described as optical, designed to be looked at through convex lenses, thus increasing the effect of perspective. The optical views, highlighted with colour, were set up in stands on the streets in many areas and were very popular at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century.
