Abstract
(Innisfree) (b London, Apr 28, 1932; d New York City, Sept 28, 1993). American photographer of English birth. Moore was a New York City–based photographer known for his extensive documentation of performance and time-based art of the 1960s and 1970s. Moore began his career working in the dark-rooms of Life magazine. During this time Moore would become influenced by leading photojournalists of the day, particularly the work of W. Eugene Smith and O. Winston Link. An early advocate of then emerging forms of contemporary dance and performative works, Moore began documenting performances and Happenings at the Judson Memorial Church in 1961. During this time Moore photographed happenings by Claes Oldenburg and Jim Dine, Fluxus events, and the choreographers and dancers of the Judson Dance Theater including Yvonne Rainer, Steve Paxton, and Deborah Hay. Utilizing techniques drawn from photojournalism, Moore often relied on high-contrast black-and-white photography, use of available light, and an emphasis on the performers’ relationship to their surroundings.
