Abstract
Italian, 17th century, male. Born in Cento, 7 May 1603 according to Baruffaldi; died 1649, in Bologna. Painter, draughtsman. Animals, birds, plants, landscapes, still-lifes (including flowers/fruit). One of the most eminent of Italian still-life painters, although he also excelled at landscapes (in which his brother, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri called 'Il Guercino', painted the human figures). Five paintings of flowers, fruit and animals (now in Modena) are typically mentioned as fine examples of Barbieri's work. Two paintings - one of fowl and the other of plants, mushrooms and birds - are preserved in the Palazzo Corsini in Rome. Another regularly mentioned painting by Barbieri hangs in the Costabili Gallery in Ferrara. Barbieri authored a 'sales catalogue' published by Malvasia, which listed paintings executed by himself and his brother, together with the prices he expected them to fetch.
