Abstract
German, 20th century, male. Born 2 July 1943, in Leipzig; died 17 February 1977, in the Maldive Islands. Painter (including mixed media), draughtsman, engraver. Murals. Blinky Palermo's adopted family settled in Münster in 1952. In 1961, he went to the art school there, and the following year was admitted to the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. In 1963, he attended courses by Bruno Goller and Joseph Beuys, with whom he subsequently remained in contact. In 1964, he adopted the name Palermo, after the boxing promoter and Mafia member Blinky Palermo. At Düsseldorf, he forged close ties with other students such as Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke and Imi Knoebel, with whom he shared a studio in 1968. In 1967, he broke off his studies in Düsseldorf, and two years later settled in Mönchengladbach. In 1970, he and Gerhard Richter travelled to the USA together, a trip that was repeated in 1973. In 1974, Palermo settled in New York, returning to Düsseldorf in 1976. He was cremated in Sri Lanka....
