Abstract
The relationship between an illustration and its text is varied. In the block-book the image dominates the text, but in most books the image is dependent on or explanatory of the text. In scientific, travel, and other informative books images are didactic, even utilitarian, extending or complementing the verbal message. In fictional works they can act as interpretations or visual equivalents of scenes, or they can be iconic and symbolic, while in religious books they may be used to provoke piety. More generally, images may be present merely to enhance sales. Physically, the illustrations may be close to the corresponding text or might, instead, be employed to indicate textual subdivisions, in the manner of the historiated initial. Though a few incunabula were hand-illustrated, the woodcut (see Woodcut, §II) dominated book illustration before 1600, as this allowed the simultaneous printing of both text and image.
