Abstract
Italian, 17th century, male. Born 1582, in Ostiano, near Mantua; died 1622, in Rome. Painter. Religious subjects, portraits, genre scenes, still-lifes. Bartolomeo Manfredi was a pupil of Niccolò Circignano according to some biographers, of Christofano Roncalli according to others, or of Pomarancio according to Baglione. In any case, he seems to have been influenced to the point of plagiarism by Caravaggio, and may, indeed, have received advice from this master. Manfredi painted mainly genre scenes: groups of card players, meetings of bandits, and soldiers on guard, all notable for their draughtsmanship and the liveliness of colour.
