Abstract
(b Vila Nova de Gaia, Nov 12, 1866; d São Mamede de Riba Tua, Vila Real, June 21, 1942). Portuguese sculptor. Son of the sculptor and potter, José Joaquim Teixeira Lopes, he completed his sculpture course in 1884 at the Academia de Belas-Artes, Oporto, where he was a pupil of António Soares dos Reis. In 1885 he was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, and was taught by Paul Berthet (fl 1870–94) and Jean Cavalier. He gained first place and continued his studies until 1894 in the studios of Charles Gauthier (1831–91) and Pierre-Jules Cavelier. He exhibited annually at the Salon de Paris between 1887 and 1893 showing Cain (marble, 1890; Oporto, Mus. N. Soares dos Reis) and The Widow (1893; Lisbon, Mus. N. A. Contemp.), a marble group that was highly praised and brought him success and a gold medal at the 1896 International Exhibition, Berlin.
