Abstract
[Lin Zhizhu] (b Taichung County, 1917; d Feb 13, 2008). Taiwanese painter and art educator. Lin Chih-chu went to Japan at the age of 12 and studied Japanese painting at the Imperial Art School (now Musashino Art University). He learned from masters such as Yamaguchi Hōshun (1893–1971) and Kawasaki Shoko (1886–1977). Influenced by Chinese painting, Nihonga (Japanese-style painting), known Tōyōga in Taiwan, is a unique style of painting that uses gouache. Tōyōga (Eastern-style painting) was coined in contradistinction to Yōga (Western-style painting), suggesting the cultural differences between the Oriental and Occidental cultures. Nihonga was introduced to Taiwan in the period of Japanese colonialization (1895–1945) and became an important art form in Taiwan’s society. When Lin was 24, his work was selected for the Imperial Exhibition in Japan, a great honor for the Taiwanese people.
