Abstract
(b Paris, May 6, 1724; d ?Paris, 27/Jan 28, 1803). French architect and writer. He trained under Jacques-François Blondel and Jean-Laurent Legeay and won the Prix de Rome in 1750, having been placed second the preceding year (drawings, Paris, Ecole B.-A.). While in Rome (1751–4) he sketched the frescoes by Annibale Carracci in the Palazzo Farnese, and in 1754 he obtained permission to visit Athens. Travelling via Pula and Constantinople (now Istanbul) to Greece, he arrived only weeks after the departure of James Stuart and Nicholas Revett, both architects from the English community in Rome. After visiting Delos, he spent some months sketching and measuring in Athens. He also visited Corinth and Sparta, returning in 1755 via Rome to Paris.
