Abstract
(b Paris, March 31, 1782; d Paris, June 12, 1867). French architect and teacher. His father was an avid amateur of landscape painting and brother-in-law of Antoine-Laurent-Thomas Vaudoyer. Lebas began his formal studies with Vaudoyer in 1796 but soon transferred to the atelier of Charles Percier; the architecture of Percier and Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine, and the scope of their practice, including furniture and the decorative arts, marked Lebas for the rest of his life. Although he never won the Prix de Rome, he travelled extensively in Italy in 1804, 1806–8 and again in 1811. In 1806–8, when he was also doing military service in Italy, he spent much time sketching views and travelling with François Debret, also from Percier’s studio, with whom he began to compile a lavish volume of measured drawings and views of all the executed work of Jacopo Vignola.
