Abstract
(b ?Paris, c. 1605–10; d ?Paris, before Sept 18, 1666). French calligrapher. He is known from the baptismal record of his son (26 April 1637) to have held the appointment of Noteur de la Musique du Roy. Works ascribed to him (107 according to Portalis, 46 according to Brunet) include books of prayers and devotion as well as secular manuscripts, most of them intended for such prestigious patrons as Louis XIV, his mother Anne of Austria (1601–66), Cardinal de Richelieu and various other notables. Jarry’s earliest known manuscript is probably the Preparatio ad missam (octavo, 1633), made for Dominique Séguier, Bishop of Meaux; in 1639 he executed the folio Preparatio ad missam, bound with the arms of Cardinal de Richelieu, and in 1640, the Psaultier de Jésus contenant de très dévotes prières (octavo; Paris, Bib. N., MS. fr. 14851) either for Nicole, Duchesse de Lorraine (d 1657), or more likely, for her sister (and sister-in-law) ...
