Abstract
Cathedral in Paris, France. In 1160 Bishop Maurice de Sully decided to rebuild the old Merovingian cathedral, which was situated at the eastern end of the Ile-de-la-Cité. This building, partially uncovered in excavations since the 19th century, was on a huge scale with a five-aisled nave and a façade 36 m wide. It had been partially rebuilt during the 12th century, with a stained-glass window of the Virgin in Glory, which disappeared in the 18th century. The new choir, begun in 1163, was probably finished in 1177, and in 1182 the papal legate consecrated the high altar. The transept was finished during the episcopate of Eudes de Sully (1197–1208); at his death the nave vaulting was being completed (see fig.), and the façade had just been laid out.
