Abstract
Dutch, 17th – 18th century, male. Born 26 October 1645, in Dordrecht; died c. 28 August 1727, in Dordrecht. Painter. History painting, religious subjects, mythological subjects, portraits, genre scenes, local scenes. He was a pupil of Samuel van Hoogstraten and later (around 1660) of Rembrandt, in Amsterdam. He then returned to Dordrecht, where he settled. De Gelder painted religious scenes and Orientalist subjects in the style of Rembrandt. Between 1680 and 1687 he executed a series of canvases based on the Old Testament Book of Esther. He was an artist of considerable power, and one of Rembrandt's few exceptionally talented pupils. During the later 17th century his anecdotal subjects (like those of Flinck) proved more popular than the weightier, more profound paintings of his illustrious master.
