Abstract
(b 1857; d 1918). American potter based in Biloxi, MS. He produced artistic redwares of unusual character and marked originality between 1892 and 1907. His work was wheel-thrown to exquisite thinness and then adeptly altered with twists and frills. Ohr promoted himself as the ‘mad potter of Biloxi’, but the focus on his personality rather than his art meant that when he died he was soon forgotten. In 1910, in failing health, Ohr had passed his studio to his son for use as a car repair shop. In the late 1960s, Jim Carpenter, a dealer in antique cars, visited the shop in search of spare parts, and was shown boxes of Ohr’s work. He bought the entire consignment and, back in New Jersey, established a small business selling the pottery to collectors.
