Abstract
Spanish, 20th – 21st century, male. Born 1951, in Benimamet (Valencia). Sculptor, draughtsman. Santiago Calatrava trained first as an artist and then as an architect, and was awarded a civil engineering diploma in Zurich. As an architect, Calatrava is known for the central railway station in Zurich and for a number of bridges in Spain. His work as a sculptor and draughtsman is not simply a response to or draft of his architectural projects, but a three-dimensional creation supported by an organic approach to form. He draws inspiration from the articulation of the human body and the structures of plants and works in materials such as fine woods, marble and metal.
