Abstract
[España] Country in south-western Europe, occupying most of the Iberian peninsula and also including the Balearic and Canary islands. Its population in 1991 was c. 39 million. Mainland Spain is bordered by Portugal to the west and by France and the principality of Andorra to the north, while its southern tip is separated from the north African coast by the Strait of Gibraltar. It comprises an area of c. 504,000 sq. km (see fig. and see fig.) and contains major mountain ranges, such as the Pyrenees in the north and the Sierra Nevada in the south, and raised plains, such as the La Mancha region in south-east central Spain. The country is divided into 17 communities, some of which—such as Catalonia (Catalunya) and the Basque Country (Euskadi)—have their own language and retain a strong sense of separate identity. The capital is Madrid.
