Abstract
(Andreas) (b Copenhagen, June 4, 1798; d Copenhagen, April 29, 1870). Danish art historian and critic. He first read law at Kobenhavns Universitet, followed by theology and then history of art; since the latter was not yet an established discipline he had to compile his own education. He became friends with such notable contemporary painters as C. W. Eckersberg and familiarized himself with collections of art in Copenhagen, as well as studying drawing and perspective at the Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi. From 1822 he spent three years travelling through Germany and Italy acquiring knowledge of Romanticism as well as medieval and Italian art, which were to form the basis of his work. Back in Copenhagen he lectured on Classical art at the academy from 1826 and at the University from 1856. Between 1829 and 1833 Høyen was paid to travel throughout Denmark recording its art and architecture, and he made particularly thorough records of the collections at the National Portrait Gallery at Fredriksborg (mostly destroyed by fire in ...
