Abstract
Method of decorating a ground material by stitching, cutting or withdrawing threads or by applying beads, pieces of fabric etc. Embroidery has been used throughout the world from the earliest times. From the beginning its form varied according to climatic and social conditions and the local availability of materials. These long-established differences persisted, though archaeological evidence shows that embroidered goods and the materials were widely traded as early as the 5th century bc. Techniques and styles were also spread by migration and conquest, though they were often modified by local practice, as in the two-way exchange between England and India in the late 17th century and early 18th. The importance of embroidery has fluctuated with the availability of other decorated textiles, such as patterned silks, and with changing fashions in dress and furnishings.
