Abstract
[Giulio Mazarini] (b Pescina, July 14, 1602; d Vincennes, March 9, 1661). French patron and collector of Italian origin. Educated at the Collegio Romano and in Spain at the university in Alcalá, he joined the papal army in 1625. A brilliant negotiator, he soon became a papal diplomat. In 1630 he met Cardinal Armand-Jean du Plessis de Richelieu; in 1632 and again in 1634–6 he was papal nuncio extraordinary in France; and in 1642 he was made a cardinal by Louis XIII. He rose rapidly at Court, becoming first minister to Anne of Austria, who acted as Regent from 1643 to 1651, when Louis XIV gained his majority. At that time Mazarin became the King’s first minister. His administrative career was complicated by war with the Austrian and Spanish Habsburgs (1635–59) and by the Frondes, a series of civil wars between 1648 and 1653.
