Abstract
(b Avignon, c. 1425; d after 1495). French sculptor. He was the nephew and probably also the pupil of Jacques Morel, with whom he may have worked on the tomb of Charles I, Duke of Bourbon and Agnes of Burgundy (completed 1448–53) in St Pierre, Souvigny. In 1461 Le Moiturier was commissioned by Canon Jacques Oboli to execute an altarpiece for St Pierre, Avignon. Since this work remained unfinished at the time of the patron’s death, a new contract was drawn up with the church canons in 1463 for a Last Judgement altarpiece, to be completed within two years. It was to include Christ as Judge, four angels, sixteen figures representing the resurrected, and statues of SS Peter and Paul. From this impressive stone monument (c. 7 m high; destr. 17th century), there survive two three-quarter life-size angels, one supporting emblems of the Passion, the other blowing the trumpet of judgement.
