Abstract
(fl Wiener Neustadt, 1486; d 1501). Wood-carver. He is first mentioned in 1486, married to a rich heiress and living in the elegant Deutschherrenviertel (Teutonic Knights’ quarter) of the town. Mayer and Oettinger attributed to him the Annunciation group and Apostle figures in the nave of Wiener Neustadt Cathedral. A signature formerly beneath one of the Apostles was interpreted as his monogram. The figures originate from the circle of Nicolaus Gerhaert: the figure types of the Nördlingen Altar (dated 1462; see Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists, §I, ) and in particular the pulpit of Strasbourg Cathedral (dated 1485) correspond very closely to those in Wiener Neustadt. If Luchsperger was indeed responsible for the Wiener Neustadt figures, he must have been among the sculptors who came to Austria from the Upper Rhine area in the succession of Gerhaert.
