Abstract
[Chriep(b)avmKriechpaumKriechp(b)aumKriechp(b)emKriech(b)om] German family of artists. The name is first documented in 1256 and 1280, and in 1401 Ulrich Kriechbaum of Wels was mentioned in a Passau toll-book. Ulrich (Neunhauser) Kriechbaum took over the workshop of the Munich painter Conrad Sachs in 1450. The most prominent member of the family was Martin Kriechbaum, possibly the stepbrother of Ulrich. Martin has been identified as the master of the kefermarkt altar (see Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists §I). His two sons Stefan and Sebastian and his ?stepson Paul were probably also painters and sculptors, Stefan active until c. 1525. Paul’s hand has also been identified on the Kefermarkt altar.
