Abstract
(fl c. 1660–65; d after 1707). English painter. His first signed portrait miniatures date from the early 1660s, but there is no documentary record before 1673, when he succeeded Samuel Cooper as Limner to Charles II. His oval miniature of Catharine of Braganza (Windsor Castle, Berks, Royal Col.) is a well-drawn and colourful example of his reticent approach to the interpretation of character. He also held the post of Keeper of the King’s Picture Closet, which appears to have stimulated his ambition to enlarge his scope. He had, in 1668, painted a rectangular miniature of Lady Anne Cavendish, William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Devonshire, and their Page (Burghley House, Cambs), a composition of three half-lengths in a landscape that derives from van Dyck and Lely. He went on to make a number of limned copies of Old Master paintings. Having held a lottery of miniatures in 1685, he staged another lottery in 1698 called ‘The Hopeful Adventure’, in which there were money prizes and a large collection of miniatures to be won.
