Abstract
[PeeterLuke, Laurence] (b ?c. 1645; d London, bur Dec 3, 1724). English painter. It used to be believed that there were two artists, Peter Cross and Laurence Cross(e); the miniatures once divided between them are now all assigned to Peter Cross. The confusion was started by Vertue, who read the entwined initials PC of his signature as LC. The full signature Peeter Cross on a miniature of Sir James Ogilby (1698; Daphne Foskett priv. col.) resolved this long-standing mistake. An early example of Cross’s mature style is found in his portrait of William Gore (1670; London, V&A). Painted when Samuel Cooper was the dominant artist in the field, this miniature shows his individual preference for stippling, in contrast to Cooper’s broad hatching. As Cross’s career developed he elaborated this method, juxtaposing dots of red, blue and green and allowing the white ground of the vellum support to shine through the pigment.
