Abstract
Austrian family of patrons. One of the oldest Tyrolean noble families, they were based from 1473 to 1824 at Mezzocorona, near Trent (now in Italy), being hereditary marshals to the bishops of Trent from 1478. In 1526 they were raised to the imperial rank of Reichsfreiherr. The marriage of Franz Wilhelm von Firmian to Magdalena von Thun in 1678 advantageously allied them to another leading family of the region. Franz Alphons von Firmian, one of the sons of this marriage, took the Tyrol-born painter Paul Troger into the family’s service when young and sent him on his artistic training in Venice. Franz Alphons became a Reichsgraf when this imperial title was conferred on the family in 1728. His brother Leopold Anton Eleutherius von Firmian (b Munich, 27 May 1679; d Salzburg, 22 Oct 1744) began his career as a page with Johann Ernst von Thun-Hohenstein, Archbishop of Salzburg, having an education in Rome, and subsequently rose through various church appointments to become himself Archbishop of Salzburg in ...
