Abstract
[It. Roma] Capital city of Italy and the metropolis of the Roman Catholic Church located mid-way on the western Italian coast. The early city spread over the seven traditional hills (Palatine, Capitoline, Aventine, Celian, Esquiline, Viminal, and Quirinal). Its role as capital, first of the Roman Empire (see Rome, ancient), then of the Papal State, and finally of the Italian State, has accorded the city huge historical and artistic importance. Rome’s heritage has inspired and fascinated generations of artists and architects, both native and foreign. Roman historians established 21 April 753 bce as the date of Rome’s foundation, when, according to the myth, Romulus founded a city on the Palatine Hill. Virgil, in the Aeneid, also followed tradition by linking Romulus and Aeneas, the famous hero who survived the Trojan War and settled in Latium after an eventful journey.
