[Huge; Huygh] (b ?Koudekerck, nr Leiden, c. 1460; d Leiden, ?1534–8). North Netherlandish painter and draughtsman. Although there is archival information about the life of Hugo Jacobsz., father of Lucas van Leyden, nothing can be said with certainty about his artistic activity; van Mander called him an ‘outstanding painter in his time’. According to the archives of the Hieronymusdal monastery near Leiden, then an important artistic centre, between 1475 and 1481 he was an assistant to the painter Brother Tyman. By 1485 he was established as an independent artist in Leiden and in 1488 he is recorded as living in Gouda. He returned to Leiden before October 1494. Attempts (Dülberg, Gibson) to identify him with the south Netherlandish Master of the Turin Crucifixion, so-called after a triptych in the Museo Civico d’Arte Antica, Turin, have failed to find much support.
