Abstract
(b Mount Gambier, S. Australia, Feb 10, 1926). Australian painter, designer, muralist, printmaker and teacher. McGilchrist studied in Adelaide at the Girls’ Central Art School and South Australian School of Arts and Crafts (part-time; 1936–46) and Adelaide Teachers College (1945–6). McGilchrist moved to Melbourne in 1948, initially to study modern dance with Elizabeth Weiner, but she later studied graphic media and design at Melbourne Institute of Technology (1952–5). She joined the Contemporary Art Society (CAS) in 1953 and became one of its young avant-garde painters using Surrealist automatism for initial inspiration. She depicted social outcasts at Kew Mental Hospital and the plight of refugees and migrants in varied media and styles. In 1956 McGilchrist won the Adelaide Advertiser Prize for Contemporary Art (shared with Wladislaw Dutkiewicz) and in 1958 the Helena Rubenstein Mural Prize.
