Abstract
[Napoli] Italian city. The largest and most important city in South Italy, Naples is situated on the Bay of Naples, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, to the west of Mt Vesuvius. It has had a varied and lively history, starting as a Greek colony and being ruled by the Romans, the Norman kings of Sicily, the Ghibelline house of Hohenstaufen, the Angevins, the house of Aragon, the French, the Spaniards, the Austrians, and the Bourbons, until becoming part of united Italy in 1860. In art Naples is most famous for its exuberant Baroque paintings, sculpture, and buildings of the 17th–18th centuries. Despite rapid industrialization after World War II, the city is still relatively poor, hugely overcrowded, and the victim of social and environmental problems. The historic centre of Naples has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995. B. Capasso: Napoli greco-romano (Naples, 1905)G. Galasso: Mezzogiorno medievale e moderno (Torino, 1965)...
