Abstract
(b Hamburg, May 2, 1908; d W. Berlin, July 17, 1967). German sculptor. After completing his apprenticeship as a wood-engraver and attending the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg, he continued his studies in Paris (1929–32). At this time the artists who most influenced his approach to and expression of three-dimensional form were Charles Despiau, Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Aristide Maillol. Maillol, in particular, and his view of sculpture as a work of art developing outwards from the inside, was to remain an important influence on Hartung’s oeuvre. During his period in Florence (1932–3) Hartung explored the work of Donatello. He found especially fascinating the way that in the figurative sculptures the skeleton was apparent under the soft flesh. His encounter with Etruscan sculpture was also influential; its tendency to use representational forms derived from abstract symbols might have been a factor in Hartung’s future development.
