Abstract
Chlo.ro.flex' us. Gr. adj. chloros green; L. masc. n. flexus a bending; M.L. masc. n. Chloroflexus green bending. Chloroflexi / “Chloroflexi” / “Chloroflexales” / “Chloroflexaceae” / Chloroflexus Filaments of indefinite length; cells 0.5–1.5 × 2–6 µm; none differentiated (Figure 1). Cell division by fission, no branching. No internal proliferations of cell membrane, except mesosomes; chlorosomes present when anaerobically grown. Motile by gliding. Thin sheath may be present. Stain Gram‐negative, but cell wall not typical of Gram‐negative bacteria. No flagella. The mol% G + C of the DNA is: 53.1–54.9 or 56.7–57.1. Type species: Chloroflexus aurantiacus Pierson and Castenholz 1974a, 7.
