Abstract
The Vespasian Psalter, an eighth‐century Roman Psalter from Canterbury, features a ninth‐century Mercian gloss, ninth‐century additions on the importance of the Psalms, and eleventh‐century prayers in the hand of the scribe Eadwig Basan. Its particular importance for manuscript studies lies in being the earliest surviving Roman Psalter and also the earliest example of a biblical text in English. Vespasian is also known for its full‐page miniature of King David and his musicians, and for its decorated initial capitals.
