Abstract
Nostalgia is a longing for a past that is believed to be preferable to the present time. Nostalgia uses shared cultural memory rather than personal memory in depicting the past. Nostalgia has been present in sociology since its beginnings but has become prominent in the late twentieth and early twenty‐first centuries in cultural and political life. Much of the heritage industry is premised on a form of nostalgia, remembering the past as a time of greater community and tighter social bonds. Recent politics, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States, has been shaped by a conservative nostalgia for a past utopia of modern life.
