Abstract
Diabetic polyneuropathy encompasses a number of neuropathic syndromes, the commonest of which is chronic diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). • DPN is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. • Clinical assessment must include a careful history, inquiring about sensory, autonomic, and motor symptoms. • Other possible causes for neuropathy should be excluded. • Peripheral neurological examination should include: inspection of the feet and legs, assessment of sensory modalities including the 10 g monofilament test and examination of ankle and knee reflexes. • Finally footwear should be inspected for poor fit, abnormal wear, and internal pressure areas or foreign bodies. • Cardiac autonomic neuropathy is a serious complication of diabetes that can result in sudden death. • Diabetic autonomic neuropathy has many manifestations.
