Abstract
This chapter describes the practical use of antiviral agents other than those used in the treatment of HIV (Chapter 33) and viral hepatitis (Chapter 34). Treatment of herpes simplex virus infection is discussed first, including primary and recurrent orolabial infection, eczema herpeticum, ocular infection, genital herpes, neonatal herpes, herpes simplex encephalitis, and infection in the immunosuppressed patient. This is followed by treatment of varicella-zoster virus infection (chickenpox, neonatal chickenpox, in immunocompromised patients, herpes zoster), and of Epstein–Barr virus infection, followed by treatment and prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus infection in pregnancy and in immunocompromised patients. Viral respiratory tract infections are discussed next, the emphasis being on respiratory syncytial virus and influenza viruses. Finally, other infections such as with human papilloma and polyoma viruses are mentioned.
