Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive primary pleural malignancy. Diagnosis often requires invasive biopsy for acquisition of sufficient tissue. Despite decades of research and multimodality therapy, the optimal treatment regimen for MPM is unclear, and the prognosis is poor. In the future, though, the use of immunotherapy and biologic agents may revolutionize treatment guidelines and improve patient survival.
