Abstract
Summary Haematological patients are at increased risk of critical illness, arising from both infectious and non-infectious insults. Admission should follow discussion between senior haematology and critical care physicians, with consideration of a ‘trial of intensive care’ where there is uncertainty as to whether a patient will benefit from organ support. Outcomes for haematology patients are improving due to better patient selection and advances in patient management, including novel therapies such as chimeric antigen receptor engineered T-cells and immune checkpoint inhibitors. Survival depends more upon reversible aetiology of the critical illness rather than the underlying haematological diagnosis. Good communication, understanding, and realistic discussions regarding outcomes between the haematologist, patient, patient’s family, and critical care physician are crucial.
