Abstract
First-line treatment for obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) should be with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for most cases. The treatment effect in OCD may emerge slowly and gradually over weeks and months. Long-term treatment in OCD protects against relapse. Pharmacotherapy strategies for serotonin reuptake inhibitor-resistant OCD are under investigation; data mostly suggest a role for low-dose D2 blockers as augmentation treatment. First-line pharmacotherapy for some obsessive–compulsive and related disorders, such as body dysmorphic disorder, is similar to that for OCD. First-line pharmacotherapy for some obsessive–compulsive and related disorders, such as trichotillomania, differs from that for OCD
