Abstract
Psychiatric care in a rehabilitation hospital is based on the unique needs of the patient and the ecology of the rehabilitation hospital. Treatment of a patient in an acute care hospital is focused on diagnosis, survival, and cure of underlying pathology. When a patient has been stabilized, transfer to a rehabilitation hospital may be considered to enhance physical recovery, functional restoration, and coping strategies for any residual impairments of illness or injury. Rehabilitation focuses on the positive assets that the individual uses to cope with disability or handicap. Psychiatric treatment is given within the setting of a multidisciplinary team in which plans are made by consensual agreement. The goal is optimal medical, psychological, social, and vocational recovery.
