By causing changes in perfusion, anesthetics directly affect the function of the gastrointestinal and hepatic systems. The anesthesiologist must be aware of preoperative pathology as well as understand the potential hemodynamic changes that can lead to inadequate organ perfusion. Additionally, liver function affects overall coagulation function, and significant changes such as administration of blood products may need to be employed when a pathologic process exists in the hepatic system. The physiology of digestion, liver function, hepatic blood flow, and its related endocrinology is discussed in this chapter and introduces the reader to valuable high yield concepts related to the practice of anesthesia and gastrointestinal and hepatic systems.
