A 52-year-old male presents with a suspicious pigmented lesion that is found to be a malignant melanoma: how should he be managed? This chapter describes current management, based on up to date evidence, from primary excision to systemic therapy for metastatic disease in malignant melanoma. Topics covered include staging and prognosis based on AJCC guidelines, recommended excision margins and indications for sentinel lymph node biopsy. Management of metastatic disease covers treatment with surgery and chemotherapy. Particular focus is made on new therapies for metastatic disease including the immune modulating and targeted agents.
