This paper that consists of two parts analyzes the integration of various adaptationism research programs into the selfish gene theory. First, it analyzes sociobiology, sexual selection, and the selfish gene theory through Lakatos’ research program. The research programs commonly adopt adaptionism as a hardcore, describing that selection is the causal factor of the evolution of phenotypic traits. Each research program is developing based on hardcore, protective belts to overcome anomalies and provide more novel predictions than competing theories. Second, the components of each research program, such as hardcore, protective belts in prior evolutionary theories, are integrated into a gene-centered view and develop into the selfish gene theory. The selfish gene theory develops into a progressive research program that presents a comprehensive perspective on evolution by integrating hard core and protective belts of precedent adaptationism research programs.
