Abstract
This study investigated communication through third-country media by comparing the 2018 summit related inter-Korean with the coverage patterns of hard power and soft power. Specifically, Mongolia, which is not a party to the summit, was selected as the country to be analyzed and the three major media outlets were analyzed. As a result of this study, the Mongolian media coverage the summit related inter-Korean in a favorable manner compared to hard and soft power, even though it was not a stakeholder. This proves that the summit related inter-Korean, where soft power was realized through traditional diplomacy, acts as a smart power. And the Mongolian media gave more weight to official information sources from the South Korea and U.S. than North Korean sources when reporting on the inter-Korean and North Korea-US summits. As a result, The Mongolian media, which lacked reporting conditions, spread the views of these countries through Korean and American media. Lastly, for the Mongolian media, the inter-Korean summit had lower news value compared to domestic information. The Mongolian media listed only the facts of the summits in the comprehensive international news.
