Abstract
The purpose of this study was to observe the concentrations of air pollutants and to validate the reliability of the observation data using a drone monitoring system in a specific region in Korea. Drone monitoring system and custom-manufactured drone were carefully designed by considering several factors, such as the load weight, power consumption, turbulence, arrangement of measurement sensors, and so on. Gas sensors for monitoring NO, NO2, CO, SO2, VOC, black carbon(BC) sensor, O3 sensors, and particulate matter (PM) sensor were mounted on the monitoring system and those sensors were selected by considering those performance and specifications. For the observation of vertical profile of air pollutants, two sites areas in the central region in Korea (Chungjeongdo, Gyeonggido) were selected and flight altitudes was ranged from ground level to 150 m. Prior to the flight, PM and Ozone forecasts of measurement sites were confirmed and measurement data of two nearby monitoring stations were downloaded to comparing with the observation data during the flight. The monitoring data (PM2.5, O3), from drone monitoring system showed similar patterns to those of monitoring stations. Vertical profiles of air pollutants were not distinguished according to altitudes up to 150 m. When high PM2.5 concentration was expected, the drone monitoring data also showed the high PM2.5 concentration owing to long range transport from oversea.
