Abstract
The attempt to interpret the modern history of thought on the Korean Peninsula as a dynamic interaction between tradition and modernity is very important. This is because the dynamic discourse struggle created by the rapid contact between the Korean Peninsula and Western imperialism becomes the content of modern and contemporary Korean philosophy in itself. To this end, this study analyzed the editorials in Hakchigwang written by colonial intellectuals who played an important role in such a process. In particular, it traced the self-awareness and evaluation of traditional Eastern thought they carried out, which was called the ‘new intellectual class’. Specifically, this study first examined the problem perception and evolutionary world perception of the survival of the nation that the new intellectual class had as the starting point for criticizing traditional Eastern thought. Here, while revealing that the epistemological differentiation process for traditional Eastern thought proceeded, it revealed how modern and post- colonial plans were devised and eventually refracted. In the end, this was a process of discourse change in which a kind of original sin was unilaterally attached to traditional Eastern ideas in the emergence and spread of colonial stagnation and otherness discourse. Finally, this study examined the ideological implications This study examined the historical implications of the ideology contained in Hakchigwang’s critique of Eastern traditional ideology.
