Abstract
The purpose of this study is to verify the mediating effects of job stress and coworker relationships on the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and organizational commitment in correctional officers. To this end, a survey was conducted with 220 correctional officers working in facilities in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do using scales to measure organizational commitment, the Big Five personality traits, job stress, communication, and interpersonal relationships. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, Pearson’s correlation analysis, hierarchical multiple regression analysis, simple regression analysis, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 21.0. The main findings are as follows: First, as a result of examining the relative influence of five personality factors, job stress, and interpersonal relationships on organizational commitment in correctional officers, job stress and agreeableness, one of the Big Five personality traits, were found to significantly influence organizational commitment in correctional officers. Second, job stress fully mediated the effect of extroversion on organizational commitment and partially mediated the effect of agreeableness on organizational commitment. Lastly, coworker relationships fully mediated the impact of extroversion and openness on organizational commitment, and partially mediated the impact of agreeableness on organizational commitment.
