본 연구는 안전장비 없이 암벽을 오르는 프리솔로 등반을 생명정치의 관점으로 분석함으로써 생명권력이 작동하는 양상을 이해하려는 시도다. 이를 위해 문헌연구, 심층면담, 온라인 공론장 분석의 기법을 활용했다. 푸코가 갈파한 근대국가의 생명정치 현상은 에스포지토에 의해 ‘면역화’라는 그 작동 양상이 분석됐다. 생명정치의 면역화란 한 사회가 그 구성원들의 생명을 최대한으로 보장하기 위해 각종 사회적·의학적 병폐들을 제거하는 것이 아니라 오히려 허용하는 것을 말한다. 생명정치가 규준으로 정착한 현대 한국 사회의 일상에서 죽음은 격리되었다. 여기서 프리솔로의 금지를 생명정치적 죽음 격리 기제가 작동되는 것으로 본다면, 프리솔로는 격리된 죽음을 부활시키고 이를 다시 모면하는 기술로 볼 수 있다. 프리솔로 등반가는 죽음을 직면함으로써 얻게 되는 삶의 충만함을 말한다. 반면 프리솔로는 전적으로 금지되지는 않았으며, 대신 스펙터클로 화하면서 내셔널리즘의 기제와 생명정치의 면역장치로 전용되었다. 이 연구는 목숨 이상의 삶에의 소통이 부정되는 현상을, 프리솔로를 포착하는 시선의 차이로 분석한다. 카메라의 시선을 매개로 한 프리솔로의 시연, 촬영, 상영은 죽음 모면이 죽음 격리로 전이되는 과정을 포착한다.
This research attempts to understand processes of biopolitics by analyzing free solo rock climbing in South Korea. For this aim, I employed literature review, in-depth interviews, and discourse analysis of online sources. After Michel Foucault pioneered the conceptualization of biopolitics in modern societies, Roberto Esposito has recently suggested immunization as the key for the biopolitical. In the South Korean biopolitics, death is quarantined from everyday life, including in rock climbing as a sport largely transformed under the paradigm of recuperation. Banning the free-solo climb would be a display of the mechanism of quarantining death, whereas performing a free-solo climb reinstates death in order to defy it. In this research I document how a free solo climber narrates the fulfilling nature of one’s remaining life after having confronted death. Free solo climbs were not completely banned; instead, they were transformed into modernday spectacles and appropriated for positively nationalistic intentions, and negatively for the immunity dispositive in biopolitics. In this research I focus on the gazes that take on different meanings from free solo attempts. Performing, video capturing and redisplaying of free solo attempts revolve around the transitions from death-defying to death quarantining, and from living to existing.
