Abstract
This thesis analyzes the types of semantic expansion and the characteristics of spatial imagery in “Dream of Red Mansions”, and discusses the Korean counterpart of spatial imagery based on examples of the Korean translation of spatial imagery. The spatial imagery of A Dream of Red Mansions uses basic spatial concepts based on embodied experience to understand other abstract concepts including time, state, quantity, relationship and other abstract concepts. This semantic expansion process of spatial imagery is related to the unique history of China. Religion, ideology, way of thinking, lifestyle, etc. are closely related. Language reflects culture, so there are many inter-cultural non-response phenomena in spatial images brought about by cultural differences. Through analysis, we found that the semantic expansion form of Chinese using the spatial image “front and back” to interpret the concept of time also has a corresponding semantic expansion form in Korean, but the semantic expansion form of the concept of time is interpreted by the spatial concept “up and down”, most of which There is no corresponding form in Korean. In Chinese, most of the semantic expansion forms that use spatial concepts to interpret state and quantity have no corresponding forms in Korean, while most of the semantic expansion forms that use spatial concepts to interpret evaluation and relational concepts have corresponding forms in Korean. Mastering this corresponding form of semantic expansion of spatial imagery helps learners better understand culturally-related spatial vocabulary, and it also helps to correctly convey the cultural meaning of spatial imagery in the translation process. This is helpful for Chinese learning, Chinese education and Korean-Chinese and Chinese-Korean translation.
