1989년 공산주의의 몰락 이후, 한국 작가들은 ‘탈이데올로기’ 사회의 도덕적 혼란과 대면하면서 개인의 자아 찾기에 주의를 기울였다. 2006년에 출간된 김영하의 장편소설 『빛의 제국』은 진정성 서사라는 면에서 출중하다. 북한으로의 귀환과 남한으로의 귀순이라는 삶의 기로에 선 그 김기영이라는 간첩 이야기는, 공산주의의 환멸과 자본주의의 매혹 사이에서 자아 찾기란 어떻게 가능한가 하는 물음에 대한 진지하고, 흥미롭고, 도전적인 답변을 이룬다. 그것은 실존/연기 대립을 폐기하며 개인의 자기창조를 인식하는 한편, 진정성을 자유주의적 통치성과의 대립 관계 속에 배치한다. 그러나 김이 도달하는 세계와의 화해는 통치 권력과의 타협과 동일하다. 진정성의 이상이 자율적인 자아 창조라면, 그의 진정성의 추구는 미완일 수밖에 없다. 자유주의적 주체성-예속성의 초극은 『빛의 제국』 이후의 자아 서사에 철학적 숙제로 남아 있다.
After the collapse of Communism in 1989, Korean writers were concerned with individuals' pursuit of their selfhood, struggling with the moral disorder of “post-ideological” society. Kim Yongha's Pit ui chekuk (The Light of Empire), the novel published in 2006, stands out as a narrative of authenticity. The story about a secret agent named Kim Kiyong, who is pressed to choose between his return to the North and his submission to the South, provides a serious, interesting, and provocative answer to how it is possible for an individual to search for his/her self between disillusioned Communism and fascinating capitalism. It shows the self-creation of an individual as an act of abolishing the dichotomy of existence and performance, on the one hand and places the ideal of authenticity in opposition to liberal governmentality, on the other. However, Kim's final reconciliation with the world is identical to his compromise with the governmental power. If authenticity means aspiring toward one's autonomous self-creation, his pursuit of the ideal is incomplete. The overcoming of liberal subjectivity remains as a philosophical task of Korean narrative of the self.
